      　　本片是吉卜力事务所的开山之作。宫崎骏受到《格列佛游记》的启发写出了这个故事，并亲自担任导演将其制作成动画电影推出。这是一出剧情跌宕、充满奇幻色彩的冒险剧。剧中的主人公是一对心底纯洁的少男少女，他们与受野心和贪欲驱使的人们对抗，力图挽救传说中的天空之城。影片画面优美，音乐动人，在播映之时打动了无数孩子的心，一时间希塔成为所有男孩憧憬的对象，而巴兹则成了所有女孩的偶像。经过了几十年，本片依然魅力不减。影片入选1987年电影旬报年度十佳影片榜，一部经典动画作品。 　　该片是宫崎骏的第三部作品，也是吉卜力工作室推出的首部动画电影。这个空中大冒险的故事以19世纪的英格兰为背景，影片融合了盘踞在平流层的搞笑海盗家族、飞行机器人（设计灵感来自雨燕）、神秘的飞行城堡等超现实的蒸汽朋克元素。由于影片中根深蒂固的怪异元素，使得《天空之城》在当时并未获得太大的成功。宫崎骏则认为，个中原因是由于他选择了一个出身矿区的男孩（巴斯）作为影片的男主角。在此之后，宫崎骏几乎所有的作品都将主角设定为女性。 　　宫崎骏自评本片 　　“我想制作一部少年英雄为了梦想而不断拼搏的冒险故事。当时我就确信这种题材对观众没有吸引力。虽然过了一段时间后，很多人都说‘我好喜欢《天空之城》’，可是在院线发行时期却观者寥寥。当男性得到一份工作或某个职位时，他便被视作成年人。对于女性来说，身体形象就可以令她的角色成立，而对于男性来说则需要社会地位乃至命运这些看不见的东西去支撑。因此，像巴斯这类劳动者身份的少年，很难将观众吸引到电影院中来。可我希望还能再制作一部描写8、9岁少年英雄的影片。男孩，时常会悲剧性地存活于世。对于他们来说，在现今这个世上生活是多么艰苦的一件事。”
