[Special K] Stability, Cutscene, Framepacing, Texture Fixes - (9/8/18)
Current Work
  • Anisotropic Texture Filtering + Mipmaps

  • 16:9 Cutscenes

  • 30.0 FPS Framepacing Fix
Option to completely remove the limit (9/4/18)

  • Fix Steam Overlay crashes when disconnecting gamepads (9/3/18)

Important Notes
  • This version of Special K automatically computes missing mipmaps for textures in Shenmue 1 to fix texture aliasing problems.
The first time you enter an area or meet an NPC you may find the textures are completely black
If that happens, exit the game at your earliest convenience and the fully mipmapped texture will be loaded from disk the next time you encounter that NPC.
To minimize this problem, you are encouraged to grab my partial Mipmap Texture Pack[github.com] and place SK_Res\ in the game's directory

Download and Install
    Vanilla
Grab this[github.com] and extract it to SteamApps\common\SMLaunch\sm1
    Vanilla + Pre-HUD ReShade
Grab this[github.com] and extract it to SteamApps\common\SMLaunch\sm1

A pack of textures with mipmaps is here[github.com] (Extract those into the same directory as the DLLs, make sure your decompression software creates a directory called SK_Res)

Issues Fixed
Early versions of this mod were known to cause sprite smoothing on SEGA arcade games, this is fixed as of 8/30/18

Did You find a way to remove black bars from cutscenes without resorting to manual hex editing? Would that be possibile with a Shenmue specific version of Special K?
Thank You.

I haven't yet, I'm working on some texture relate stuff at the moment.

Mipmaps + Aniso filtering make this game a whole lot easier on the eyes :)

I see. Do You plan on working on that feature in the near future?
Anyway, thank You for all your work and all the games you fixed, man.

Subscribing to the thread, appriciate the time the effort.
Any idea as to how I can stop DOF from bluring the HUD with Reshade?

Use the specially packaged version. It applies before the HUD is drawn.

Probably not malware but there have been rumours about OP banning users from using his mods if you get on his bad side...

Well I hope this rumour isn't true...

Or he is just trolling for unnecessary reasons which is not making his reputation any better as it is if he continues this kind of behaviour.

Game seems to be locked to 29fps now for some reason

So is there a trick to get the textures to work? They're just gone from my game now. Tthe special K works fine just nothing else at all.

Just a word on the whole "Kaldaien's mods are malware" claims, because I don't want people to see that and then get scared away from using his mods, which have a long history of being incredibly helpful. Kaldaien is anti-piracy, or at least, refuses to help facilitate piracy. This, apparently, angers some people.

So much so, that they have in the past managed to somehow use his anti-piracy measures (which amount to little more than him ensuring people can't use his mods to circumvent other anti-piracy measures) in certain mods to make him out to be injecting malware into said mods. (One of the false examples they used to try to make this case, was a line of code intended to prevent crashes in a game. Yes, really. Obviously, that is not malicious code.)

Now... it is true that there is an ability in (some of) his mods to utilize SteamIDs to "blacklist" people from using his mods. Only his mods - not the games - if it were the games themselves even with his mods uninstalled, then that would be an issue. But it isn't. Moreover, he has only ever added two people to this supposed "Blacklist." And that was done because they were directly disrupting his efforts to help users. He has never used it simply to "punish" people he disagrees with, or even dislikes.

Now, that blacklist functionality can be debated as to its ethics and whether one totally agrees with it or not. I may not even personally totally agree with it, but then I'm a bit of an outlier in terms of my patience with people - so I'm the weird one there probably lol. But 99.9% of his actions are a net benefit to various communities, and his mods are most assuredly not malware. The worst thing anyone could say about them is that if a game is ever officially end of life and no longer receives support and DRM exists in it, he won't allow his mods to be used to circumvent anti-tampering measures, because, again, lhe refuses to help facilitate piracy. That is his prerogative and, imo, a principled position to take.

And if that happens? Guess what? You can simply safely remove his mods, and play your game using whatever methods are available to you. He simply won't facilitate doing so. That's all. His mods are all open source, the code in everything he does is available for all to see. There is no surreptitious malicious code anywhere in any of it.

So, disagree with his approach if you wish. But don't be afraid of his mods causing you or your system any issues. Consider this a PSA.
