As far as the game goes... it is A LOT like Destiny & Mass Effect. It takes elements from both but I would not say it is definitively better than either one.
The missions are the same as Destiny, the controls and abilities are similar Mass Effect.
Just like you have to wait for your Ghost in Destiny to do something... you’ll have to wait for something to in Anthem to load/stabilize or something of the sort. While you wait you will face waves of enemies. Most missions seem quite repetitive however.
The game play/combat is a lot like Mass Effect since it’s not a FPS. There is no taking cover how ever. The dodging, evading & gun play are on par with ME. The flying does add a new fun element.
There are two big negatives for the game. One is the load times... it takes a loooooooooong time for today’s standards. Exiting out of customizing your suit takes a loading screen. Starting off a mission takes a loading screen. Even when you’re in the mission and travel to a different area, there are loading screens.
Then the attempt to have a story and conversation choices seems like an afterthought they threw in at the last minuet. It’s no where near what Mass Effects offers but half a step above Destiny’s complete lack of conversation choices.
I would say it’s worth some of your time but it’s definitely not a revolutionary or groundbreaking new game.
I've enjoyed playing the story missions MUCH more than Freeplay, with one complaint: once you finish a mission, you'll always be sent back to one of the bases, which allows you to equip the new gear you found. Unfortunately, that's the ONLY way to change your loadout, and in order to acquire you next mission, you'll have to walk around the home base and interact with NPC's--adding in the lengthy load-times, the process takes WAY too long.... As with Mass Effect, you have conversation options, and there's a lot of dialogue. Voice acting is well done (some recognizable voices, check the IMDB for some fun!), and you can form alliances with people/groups. The background story of the 'world' is quickly introduced, and you start playing pretty quickly. Unfortunately, compared to Mass Effect the story isn't that interesting, at least to me. Also, you'll only interact and talk with other humans, not any races/species--at least there's a good variety of races/species to battle against, but their weapons and tactics are pretty boring (enemies with guns stand there and shoot, creatures try to rush you).
The variety of weapons available to you is great when including the different abilities and grenades, but the guns by themselves aren't that interesting--Destiny definitely has way more variety. Battles are as you might expect, reminiscent of Destiny and Halo maps. Enemies may spawn continuously, or you may have one giant monster to kill while dealing with a handful of minions. Getting to dish out your full arsenal along with your teammates is a lot of fun, and mastering the very different play-styles for each Javelin is challenging and rewarding (whereas in Destiny the only significant difference is in the super-abilities). I do wish that there was more variety in the open-world Freeplay map--there's just a continuous flow of mountains and waterfalls around flat valleys. There are some interior/underground areas (that require load-time), but I haven't found them worth my time. Another aspect making Freeplay a bit of a bore is that when you find loot, you have almost no idea what it is until you end your Free-play session, go back to the base, load up your Javelin in the 'Forge', and finally get to customize your load-out. There's also crafting materials (and dinky collectibles) to collect in the world, and it's very quick and easy to craft pretty much anything you've found previously--but it will be at a lower level than whatever you're currently at.
Many people are complaining about the 'insane' Trials/Tombs quests--this is a required quest that SHOULD be the first quest given, with a tutorial explaining the ins and outs of the game (like what are combos, how to use your Ultimate, etc.), and be much faster to complete. Instead you must to four remote doorways spread around the Freeplay map to even find out what you must do to complete this four-part mission, and then return after completing the tasks (for example, get 15 kills with your Ultimate, complete 3 World Events, kill 15 elites, revive 3 allies, etc.). In my opinion, completing these requirements really isn't that hard if you complete ever story mission available, including the Stronghold, and spend some time doing Freeplay and joining in some World Events--but many people complain it takes forever to meet these requirements, and I think they are used to beating games in a couple hours so they can brag about it online. Yes, the lack of a tutorial makes this very challenging to complete without going online and getting some tips, but it doesn't ruin the game unless you already hate the game, in which case you should just quit and stop complaining!
There's definitely some great aspects to Anthem, some I've mentioned already, and the design and general concept are unique enough from other similar games. There's a lot of potential here, and I hope they keep working at it, just like how No Man's Sky has undergone some major changes. I have yet to gather any Masterwork gear, and I know they're getting ready to make a bunch of changes in the coming weeks, so I have a lot to forward to. The game is definitely NOT on the level of Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed Odyssey when it comes to story, and there will need to be some big 'events' (a la Destiny) to keep people playing after completing the main story and getting bored with Freeplay. It's a bit of a frustrating let-down at launch, but there's a lot of room for growth.
